Shared Mission
All are invited to participate in God’s mission. The mission belongs to Him. It is not our mission.
We are also Better Together because we have a Shared Mission. A correct understanding of that mission realigns our sense of ownership. Here is at least one reason why I think this is important: we have all been invited to offer the gifts given to us and to participate in God’s mission (missio Dei). We remember that the mission is not ours—not the church’s mission—but God’s mission. So, we don’t spend time protecting boundaries and borders, believing we possess the ministry. Rather, as 1 Peter 2 explains, we are “a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” We have a shared mission, and we are better when we join in God’s mission together.
